Whale watching

A Front-Row Seat to the Humpback Whale Migration

Each year, from late July to early October, the warm, protected waters off Bahía Solano become a sanctuary for hundreds of migrating humpback whales. Traveling thousands of miles from Antarctica, these majestic creatures arrive to breed, give birth, and nurse their calves—offering one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in the tropics.

WHALE WATCHING EXPERIENCE

At Black Sands Lodge, whale watching is an intimate and immersive experience. With our custom-built boat and small group outings, guests enjoy close encounters in comfort and safety. Our experienced crew and naturalist guides help interpret behaviors from dramatic breaches to gentle tail slaps, bringing you closer to these animals without disturbing their natural rhythm.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE WATER

Most excursions last between three to four hours and depart right from the lodge’s private beachfront. Sightings are frequent and often include mothers and calves swimming just a few miles from the lodge. Calm conditions, dramatic coastal scenery, and the occasional dolphin pod make each outing a rich sensory experience. We provide drinks, snacks, and all the comfort needed for a relaxed marine adventure.

THE SEASON
WHEN TO VISIT

The peak whale watching season runs from late July through early October, with sightings beginning as early as late June and sometimes extending into late early November. This window offers the highest likelihood of active behaviors such as breaching, courting displays, and mother-calf bonding.
